Massachusetts (MA) was severely impacted with ice dams in the winter of 2014-2015. During this time there were many good qualified ice dam steaming companies from MN who traveled there to help. Unfortunately there was also just as many (maybe more) companies who brought hot water pressure washers and claimed they were steaming. The fact of the matter is that hot pressure washers do not produce steam temperatures and cannot run low enough psi to be considered safe for ice dam removal from a roof.
It seemed the state of MA had little knowledge of steam ice dam removal until many Minnesota companies traveled there. Most prior ice dam removal practices there involved blunt force objects like sledge hammers! OUCH! Minnesota companies were truly the heroes and the veterans who came baring all the right techniques. However there were some MN companies who came with the wrong equipment. Our fear now is that much of this wrong equipment stayed in MA and will again be used the next season. These high psi pressure washers do not produce steam and cannot run low enough psi to be safe for ice dam removal.
